Privacy Enabled Surveillance? (OPENSUR-2013)

OPENSUR-2013 is the first policy workshop of the EC funded project RESPECT (“Rules, Expectations & Security through Privacy-Enhanced Convenient Technologies”) coordinated by the University of Groningen. The aim of the workshop is investigate if the current and foreseeable implementation of ICTs in surveillance is indeed “in balance”, as well as to communicate the outcomes of the project activities to policy-makers and other stakeholders (academics, police associations, public agencies, civil society, media, etc) and to receive feedback from those stakeholders.

Abstract Submission:   April 30th

This is an open call and all interested stakeholders are invited to attend this workshop, either as presenters or observers. All the participants that wish to make a presentation are invited to submit an abstract of their presentation related to the workshop’s topics. The topics of the workshop will be organised around the following themes:

  • Economic and social impact of surveillance
  • Data collection and analysis for crime fight
  • The effectiveness of CCTV in preventing and solving crime
  • Social network analysis for crime fight
  • Possibilities and problems of geolocalisation
  • Regulating surveillance: Measures, dilemmas and limitations

All the stakeholders that are interested to attend the workshop are invited to register by 31 May 2013 using the registration form. Registration will be accepted on a first-come, first served basis. In order to accomplish a broad representation of stakeholders, the number of registrants may need to be limited. All participants are required to pay a registration fee.

Author Instructions
All the participants that wish to make a presentation are invited to submit an extended abstract (up to one page) of their proposed presentation along with a copy of their curriculum vitae, including contact information, by 30 April 2013. Authors should upload an extended abstract of max 1200 words via EasyChair Conference Management System by 30 April 2013 as well at the following address A limited number of presentations will be approved given the planned length of the workshop. Presenters will be selected by the Workshop Scientific Committee based on the material submitted. All the selected presenters will be asked to submit their presentations to the organizers by 17 June 2013.
